69011-01 - Practical course: Culturescapes 2023: Sahara 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2023
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Henri-Michel Yéré (h.yere@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content According to its founders, “Culturescapes is a transdisciplinary festival that takes place every two years in the fall. [Its] aim is to promote cross-border cultural dialogue and mutual learning between cultures, as well as collaboration and networking. [Its] mission is to engage as a platform for a more inclusive, pluricultural, open and responsible society.”

This course is the academic space of engagement with the 2023 edition of the Culturescapes festival (1st October-30th November 2023). This edition, whose main theme is Sahara, will critically engage the many artistic scenes of the African continent in their many guises.
In this course, we want to invite students to come and interact with the visiting artists and scholars who will participate in Culturescapes 2023. Students are invited to come and hone their skills in cultural criticism, cultural mediation, popular culture history and practice; they are invited to explore the links between art, society and the political at their critical points of juncture.

This engagement will take many shapes and guises: artists’ talks, public lectures, blog reportages, podcast entries. Please note that the public lectures will be opened to audiences beyond the students. Students will mediate conversations between the artists and the public. Students will report, analyse and comment artistic performances. Students will engage the Festival’s curators, and seek to understand their motivations in making such a platform possible.

The course will be structured around a set number of introductory sessions. The bulk of the course will follow the programme of Culturescapes 2023: Sahara, and will work in close collaboration with the Festival’s curation and staff.
