65944-01 - Seminar: Economics 6 CP

Semester fall semester 2023
Course frequency Every semester
Lecturers Yvan Lengwiler (yvan.lengwiler@unibas.ch)
Georg Nöldeke (georg.noeldeke@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The Seminar in Economics is designed to give students a basic insight into current research in economics. The seminar is offered jointly by faculty from different fields in economics to allow participants to study one topic in one of these fields in depth while learning from the other presen-tations what problems or issues are being discussed in current research in other fields. Students are allowed to choose which field they would like to write their paper in by selecting a supervisor. In the fall term 2023 the supervisors are Yvan Lengwiler (Banking, Finance, Growth) and Georg Nöldeke (Microeconomics Theory, Matching and Market Design). The next time Sarah Lein (Macroeconomics) supervises seminar papers will be in the spring term 2024.

Schedule:

22.9.2023: In an initial session during the first week of the spring semester, we will hold an infor-mation session explaining our expectations for the papers and the presentations. Topics will be selected through bilateral discussion with the respective supervisors. Please contact your super-visor to discuss this in more detail.

13.10.2023: In a second session, the students present their preliminary outline and approach and receive feedback (this is a pure feedback session and will not be graded).

6.12.2023 & 8.12.2023: Students present their seminar papers, which are to be handed in by 27.11.2023.
Learning objectives This seminar is designed to enable students to read and understand current research, as well as summarize it in their own words, and to present and explain their assigned paper to other students.
Bibliography Will be discussed bilaterally with supervisors.
