70998-01 - Seminar: A History of Late Modern Palestine: Before and Beyond the Conflict 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2024
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Falestin Naïli (falestin.naili@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this course, we will focus on the century of Palestine's social history before the year that marks the beginning of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We will actively avoid the pitfall of seeing that period as annunciatory of the conflict to come and will rather focus on the many transformations occuring from the Ottoman reform period onwards and also on the many expectations and hopes for the future that existed during those decades. We will be particularly attentive to patterns of coexistence and conflict between communities and to the way those were structured by political and economic transformations, both in rural and urban settings.
Learning objectives Upon completion of this course, you will
- have gained knowledge about the social history of Late Modern Palestine;
- be able to identify and recall key events and understand their larger social and political context;
- be able to analyze and critically reflect upon original sources (in English);
- know different analytical frameworks and approaches used in the historiography of Late Modern Palestine.
