Content Avoiding ethical pitfalls in research studies is more difficult than it sounds. Scholars must identify gaps in the literature, propose testable hypotheses, design rigorous studies, collect data with as few errors as possible, make sound analytic decisions, write up the study exactly as it was conducted, and incorporate editor and reviewer feedback without compromising the accuracy and honesty of the writeup. There are many pitfalls in each of these stages, and scholars at all career stages can fall prey to these pitfalls! I will provide examples from my 25-year research career and from my experience as a grant reviewer, journal reviewer, and journal editor.
Learning objectives Students should increase their understanding of the process of identifying research needs in a field of study, generating testable research questions and hypotheses, planning data collection, conducting ethical data analyses, writing journal manuscripts ethically and honestly, and revising manuscripts ethically in response to reviewer and editor feedback.
Bibliography Schwartz, The Savvy Academic. The book is about writing for publication, but it is also about conducting research ethically.
