| Content | Die griechischen und römischen Mythen mit ihrer Vielfalt an Gottheiten, Helden- und Monstergestalten üben noch heute eine grosse Faszination aus. Ein Grund dafür liegt darin, dass sie versuchen, die Welt sowie die Rolle des Menschen in ihr zu erklären und in einen grösseren Zusammenhang zu stellen. Zudem thematisieren sie Facetten des menschlichen Erlebens im emotionalen und mentalen Bereich in einer Weise, die sie – wie ihre reiche Rezeption bis in die Gegenwart zeigt – dauerhaft als aktuell erscheinen lässt. Das Seminar widmet sich dieser Anschlussfähigkeit und Relevanzwahrnehmung anhand ausgewählter Text- und Bildbeispiele aus der Antike sowie dem 20. und 21. Jahrhundert. Nach einer einleitenden Auseinandersetzung mit dem Mythosbegriff werden olympische Götter und Göttinnen (wie Zeus und Aphrodite), Ungeheuer (wie Medusa und die Sphinx) und Figuren (wie Ödipus und Narziss) in den Blick genommen. Im Fokus stehen dabei sowohl antike Glaubensvorstellungen und Reflexionen existentieller Fragen als auch zeitgenössische Deutungen und Neuerfindungen antiker Religion und Mythologie in Literatur, Film, Psychoanalyse, Wicca und Göttinnen-Spiritualität. Die Veranstaltung findet in vier Blöcken mit Lehrvorträgen seitens der Seminarleitung statt. Die Studierenden halten ihre wichtigsten Erkenntnisse und Eindrücke aus dem präsentierten Material in kurzen Reflexionsaufsätzen fest. Plenardiskussionen und Formate kollaborativen Lernens in Kleingruppen bieten die Möglichkeit, das erworbene Wissen miteinander zu vertiefen und in Rapid Talks ins Plenum zurückzuspielen. Ein Mythologie-Fachgespräch per Zoom mit Expertinnen und Experten aus verschiedenen Disziplinen und ein Quiz mit Preisverleihung runden die Erkundung „Jenseits des Olymps“ ab. --- Beyond Olympus: The Fascination and Relevance of Ancient Myths in the 20th and 21st Centuries The Greek and Roman myths, with their array of deities, heroes, and monsters, continue to exert a great fascination even today. One reason for this lies in their attempts to explain the world and the role of humans within it, placing these in a larger context. Additionally, they address facets of human experience in emotional and mental realms in a manner that, as their rich reception up to the present day shows, makes them appear perpetually relevant. The seminar dedicates itself to this applicability and perception of relevance through selected textual and visual examples from antiquity as well as the 20th and 21st centuries. After an introductory discussion on the concept of myth, it examines Olympian gods and goddesses (such as Zeus and Aphrodite), monsters (such as Medusa and the Sphinx), and figures (such as Oedipus and Narcissus). The focus lies both on ancient beliefs and reflections on existential questions as well as contemporary interpretations and reinventions of ancient religion and mythology in literature, film, psychoanalysis, Wicca, and goddess spirituality. The course will take place in four large sessions featuring lectures by the seminar instructor. Students record their key insights and impressions from the presented material in short reflective essays. Plenary discussions and formats of collaborative learning in small groups offer the opportunity to deepen the acquired knowledge with each other and present it back to the plenary in rapid talks. A mythology expert discussion via Zoom with experts from various disciplines and a quiz with a prize ceremony complete the exploration "Beyond Olympus." Course language is German. |
