36349-01 - Seminar: Theories of Practice in Social Anthropology (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2014
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Till Förster (till.foerster@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Human individuals are and were always active participants in their lifeworlds, that is, the social and cultural life that they shaped in interaction with their contemporaries. They never simply reproduced existing norms and values that were iterated from the past or primordial structures of thought. Anthropologists have addressed this most basic fact of human life as social practice, but they have done so in very different and even diverging ways – and at times, anthropology did not engage in a thorough reflection of social practice at all. However, there were strands of theorizing that have influenced anthropologists over generations, and to some extent also social scientists of other disciplinary backgrounds. In particular since the late 1990s, anthropology has increasingly overcome its former reluctance to engage in theoretical debates.
Learning objectives This seminar provides an overview of theories of practice in social anthropology. It traces their development and changing impact on the discipline from the beginning of modern anthropology in the 1920s through present debates on topical themes such as embodiment of routines and their role for ethnographic enquiry.
