60336-01 - Lecture: Population and Economic Growth (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2023
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Robert Stelter (robert.stelter@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content After centuries of economic and demographic stagnation, Western Economies experienced the take-off to modern growth. Roughly at the same time, populations underwent the demographic transition. This lecture focuses on the interplay between economic and demographic dynamics to study important epochs of human history. In a first step, we recall ideas of family economics and discrete time general equilibrium models. Then, we investigate the Malthusian epoch – the era of stagnation in population size and income. Afterwards, we turn our attention to the transition from stagnation during the Malthusian epoch to sustained growth in a unique framework: the unified theories of economic growth. Based on this framework, we discuss the role of populations during the transition to modern growth.
Learning objectives 1. Basic skills in discrete time general equilibrium models, 2. Malthusian epoch, 3. Unified growth theory
