Content - Introduction to the University / Medical library
- Use of electronic biomedical databases
- PICO structure for formulating research questions
- IMRD structure of scientific papers
- Lay-out and refering guidelines of the American Psychological Association (APA Manual, 7th edition)
- Use of the reference manager Endnote
- Scientific conduct / misconduct
- Correct citing paraphrasing and referencing
- Methodology of systematic reviews
- Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to perform und report systematic reviews
- Effective writing of scientific papers
- Use of reporting guidelines
- Pitfalls in scientific writing
Learning objectives In the course "Scientific Writing", students write and format texts in accordance with formal and publication guidelines, use of reporting guidelines and following the guidelines of good scientific conduct. Therefore, students systematically search, synthesize and refer to scientific literature.
The students:
- can name formal and content-related characteristics of scientific texts
- can formulate research questions according to the PICO structure
- can make a comprehensive search string to systematically search electronic biomedical databases
- can formulate inclusion and exclusion criteria that allow to systematically select papers that answer a formulated research question
- can name various sources of literature and use it in their own scientific work
- refer to selected literature/papers by using a reference management software
- summarize scientific papers in text and table format
- can critically use AI
- can name criteria of good scientific practice
- can correctly cite and paraphrase in their own scientific work
- can write a systematic literature review based on a selection of scientific papers
Bibliography It is strongly recommended that the students: Purchase the program Endnote 20 with a reduced student license (approx. 30 CHF) via the University Computer Center of the University of Basel (https://asknet.unibas.ch/cgi-bin/home). Set up an eduroam profile to be able to use the WLAN of the University of Basel and install the free software VPN Client on their computers to be able to connect to the network of the University of Basel from home.
