Course frequency | Every fall sem. |
Lecturers | Jan Esper (jan.esper@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | Program Some basic principles of tree ring research will be intro-duced. The workshop will start with a demonstration of core sampling together with a brief discussion on site selection and expected environmental signals. Princi-ples of sample preparation, tree ring counting and crossdating will be shown. We will discuss tree ring formation and specific anatomical features - some of which are diagnostic for environmental influences. In a more theoretical part, an introduction in tree ring detrending and standardization (whereby biological, age related noise is removed) will be given. This lecture will be followed by a demonstration using a specific pro-gram (Arstan) for tree-ring data treatment. We will investigate tree-ring measurement series and perform some initial analyses of these data including comparisons with other proxy and instrumental data. |
