36408-01 - Seminar: Resource conflicts. Causes, symptoms and solutions 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2016
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Andrea Iff (andrea.iff@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Access, distribution and management of natural resources have been at the core of many intrastate conflicts during the last 60 years. Improved natural resource governance offers opportunities for more effective conflict prevention, transformation and peacebuilding. Improved governance adresses both state as well as corporate actors and includes economic policies of redistribution as well as international private-sector initiatives. The course provides an introduction into the state of the art of causes of resource conflicts (like horizontal inequalities, greed and grievance approaches) as well as the latest research on 'solutions' to those causes (economic policies and institutions of redistribution, processes of accountability and transparency as well as multi-stakeholder initiatives).
Lernziele Students
- understand the links between natural resources, conflict and peace for different resources (renewable, non-renewable and land);
- know the different approaches to explain the causes of such conflicts;
- know conditions under which environmental stress or poor governance may contribute to the emergence / trigger conflict;
- become familiar with a range of different economic policies, initiatives and instruments to mitigate, transform and prevent conflicts over natural resources.
- have an insight into selected case studies.
