| Inhalt | In recent years, the war on terror, the revelations of unprecedented surveillance capabilities of state agencies and corporations as well as the global increase of inequality amongst populations have dramatically driven our attention toward questions of (in)security and surveillance. Usually considered the terrain of international relations, political science and defense studies, security and surveillance are themes that have recently gained the attention of anthropologists. How anthropology has contributed to the understanding of these themes is a question that will be explored during the semester. In this seminar we will seek to understand the relationships between surveillance, security and insecurity and to delineate the complexity of their dynamics. Our discussion will unpack the socio-cultural construction and genealogy of (in)security, examine the experiences of surveillance practices and trace their repercussions in people’s life and the society at large. In exploring various types of contemporary security measures and forms of surveillance through ethnographic case studies, we will aim to define the outlines of a critical anthropology of security and surveillance. (In)security and surveillance shape our lives and our societies: infuse public debates, raise concerns, fear, anger, hope; create spaces and influence circulations; define and attempt to control populations and shape our everyday life. However, (in)security and surveillance are not identical everywhere: they present local and cultural specificities and relate to different global trends. The seminar will explore various types of surveillance and security practices and trace their relation to modalities of governance. We will consider processes of securitization and insecuritization as well as shifting cultures of surveillance and (in)security. We will read and discuss ethnographic studies on checkpoints and borders, the securitization of immigration, urban insecurity and police forces, state bureaucracy, war and militarization, intelligence agencies and the practices of espionage, the politics of fear, panopticism and post-panoptic surveillance, digital surveillance and cyber-defense and practices of resistance to security measures and surveillance practices. At the end of the seminar, students should have acquired knowledge about various anthropological perspectives on security, insecurity and surveillance and be able to critically approach new questions and issues on their own. |
| Lernziele | The course aims to foster critical analysis of security, insecurity and surveillance and to present anthropological perspectives on various topics, theories and socio-cultural contexts related to the core questions debated. This introductory course aims to encourage students to further investigate these issues and pursue their own analyses. |
| Literatur | A references list will be distributed at the beginning of the semester and the core texts will be online on ADAM. Various documentaries will be shown and discuss in the classroom during the semester. |

| Teilnahmebedingungen | Grundstudium abgeschlossen. Die Teilnehmerzahl ist aus Gründen der Qualitätssicherung der Lehre auf 25 beschränkt. Die Teilnehmenden werden nach Fachrichtung, Studiengang und in der Reihenfolge ihrer Anmeldung auf die Liste gesetzt. Wer im Rahmen von Auslandaufenthalten und von Austauschprogrammen in Basel studiert wird unabhängig vom Listenplatz immer aufgenommen. |
| Anmeldung zur Lehrveranstaltung | Lehrveranstaltungen mit beschränkter Teilnehmerzahl können ab 01.08.2016 bis 01.09.2016 über MOnA belegt werden. Die Zuteilung erfolgt durch die Dozierenden. Bis 12.09.2016 erhalten alle definitiv aufgenommenen Studierenden eine Bestätigungsmail des Dozierenden. Wer an der ersten Sitzung einer Veranstaltung dennoch unentschuldigt fehlt, wird von der Liste gestrichen. In der ersten Sitzung einer Veranstaltung oder per Mail in der Woche der ersten Sitzung erfahren Studierende auf einer Warteposition, ob sie doch teilnehmen können. |
