Inhalt | Ruth Weiss had an extraordinary career as a journalist in southern Africa during the decolonisation and liberation era (c. 1960s-1980s). She also built up an extraordinary archival collection that she donated to the Basler Afrika Bibliographien (BAB). Ruth Weiss (born 1924) fled Nazi Germany as a child and grew up in Johannesburg. Newspapers first published her articles in the 1950s and from the 1960s onwards she worked full-time as a journalist in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Germany and Great Britain. Her reporting focused on politics and the economy. She interviewed many politicians and political activists and was in particular interested in women involved in the liberation movements. She was one of few women journalists in southern Africa at the time, and one of few journalists covering gender politics. Throughout her career, Ruth Weiss built up an extensive archival collection of manuscripts, publications, letters, photographs and sound recordings. This collection constitutes an important resource for future research on southern African history. Besides the content of the collection, also its form is interesting. How did Ruth Weiss build up her collection? What distinguishes a journalistic archive from other archives? What are the archival politics of the collection and how do stakeholders like the BAB and international researchers deal with them? The main aim of the course is to strengthen participants’ skills as researchers who are confident in developing research questions for their own projects based on theory, existing research and their own archival research. The course has both theoretical and practical components. The theoretical component consists of the reading and discussing of key texts concerned with journalism, gender and archives in southern African history. The practical component consists of working with the records in the Ruth Weiss collection at the BAB. There will be opportunities for exchanges with leading researchers who will be invited to participate in archive sessions together with the course participants. There is also a possibility to participate in an excursion to the Iwalewahaus in Bayreuth on the occasion of the opening of an exhibition about the life and work of Ruth Weiss. |
