46621-01 - Seminar: Rails and Roads: The materiality and (geographical) imagination of transport in Southern Africa 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2017
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Giorgio Miescher (giorgio.miescher@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Modern transport infrastructure such as rails and roads has shaped and continues to shape Southern African space. The advancement of the railway in the late 19th and early 20th century dramatically changed transport in Southern Africa. The new technology came along with a new dimension of space/time compression, as goods and people began to move through space at much greater speed. The iron tracks of the railway network henceforth defined the main transport routes and created new spatial hierarchies (e.g. based on the distance to the next railway station). Until far into the 20th century the railway was the dominant mode of transport in Southern Africa before it eventually lost this role to road transport. The shift form rail to road transport allowed for new forms of mobility, such as the use of private cars and, again, changed the conditions for moving through space.
In the seminar we explore the establishment of the railway and road network in Southern Africa. Thereby we discuss the changing political, social, economic, and legal framework in which the transport infrastructure developed. Case studies will include e.g. the dominant position of the state-owned company South African Railways & Harbours and its transport monopoly, or the spread of private motor cars. Based on a theoretical introduction to the concept of geographical imagination the seminar explores how different modes of transport, i.e. railways, buses and private cars, influenced the perception and imagination of the Southern African landscape, and how such perceptions were shaped and reinforced by visual propaganda of various actors like the railway, petrol companies, and the automobile industry. To understand the changing imaginations linked to movement through space the participants of the seminar also work with archival material such as photographs, tourist advertisements, travelogues and maps but also personal memories and travel accounts.
