Inhalt | This seminar addresses the fact that after the Brexit vote in June 2016, Britain is going through a transformation process of historical proportions. Related to a research project, now highly topical, on British literary and cultural discourses of Europe at our English department, the course will explore how these discourses are played out in the field of literature. While we will also look at political and historical writing and journalism addressing Britain's conflicted relationship with Europe and the European Union, the emphasis in this seminar will be on fiction with a view to understanding the part fictional narratives play in shaping Britain's current political landscape. |
Lernziele | Students will broaden their knowledge about British literary and cultural discourses of Europe and improve their skill in critical analysis as well as their understanding of the role of literature and other media in cultural discourses. Seminar discussions will provide the basis and frame for independent research. |
Literatur | Texts (to be purchased; discussed in this order): - Daphne du Maurier, "Rule Britannia" (1972) - Tim Parks, "Europa" (1997) - Rose Tremain, "The Road Home" (2007) - Paul Kingsnorth, "The Wake" (2014) Further material will be made available on the ADAM server. |
