43474-01 - Seminar: Asian Englishes 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2018
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Jakob Leimgruber (jakob.leimgruber@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The English language has a strong and growing presence in Asia. From the language of the colonial power to the language of national self-identification after independence, English now exists in various forms and in various sociolinguistic settings that make its presence in Asia particularly fascinating. The seminar will introduce students to the language political climate in countries as diverse as, among others, Singapore, India, Thailand, and the Philippines, countries in which English ranges in function from a native and official language to an auxiliary administrative language or to a language largely confined to the tourism industry. A comparison of the linguistic forms of these varieties will enable a larger-scale picture to emerge, outlining the shape and role of English in this increasingly important part of the world.
Lernziele Students will develop an understanding of the varieties of English spoken in Asia. They will be taught linguistic features and sociolinguistic settings that differentiate national and sub-national varieties, as well as how these varieties interact at the (supra-)regional level. They will also learn to situate them within the larger theoretical framework of world Englishes.
Literatur A detailed reading list, as well as selected readings, will be made available on ADAM.

Teilnahmebedingungen This course is open to BA students of English who have passed all three introductory modules (including the proseminar papers) and to MA students of English and MSG Sprache und Kommunikation.
Anmeldung zur Lehrveranstaltung In order to ensure a good learning environment, we aim at no more than 25 students per class. We ask you to register via the following doodle link: https://doodle.com/poll/8yzvhd3dr3znu3yq (3 classes).
We recommend that you create a doodle account. Please only register for a maximum of TWO seminars and only for more than one if you really intend to take the course. Should you have not made it into one of the courses and you are only able to register for the waiting lists, we guarantee that we will take you in the course with the least student numbers. The doodle will close on 9 September in order to finalize student distribution in the week before term starts.
