53971-01 - Seminar: Visible English in the Linguistic Landscape 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2019
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Jakob Leimgruber (jakob.leimgruber@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The linguistic landscape is visible, written language in public space. As we move through our daily life, we are constantly exposed to such written language, in shopping streets, around university buildings, in city trams. What seems like a random collection of texts all around us turns out, upon closer inspection, to be highly organised and to follow a number of clever rules. In this class, we will see examples of multilingual signage from around the world, and explore the ways in which English has made its way into many of these contexts. The growing body of research into the area will also be dealt with in some detail. Students will have the chance to collect data of their own and apply the theory to them.
Lernziele Students will learn to critically view the linguistic landscape. They will acquire the theoretical tools to understand the written language that surrounds them. The interdisciplinarity nature of the topic will be addressed, and students will be exposed to a variety of approaches to the LL.
Literatur A detailed reading list, as well as selected readings, will be made available on ADAM.
