55113-01 - Übung: Writing for peer-reviewed journals in 10 easy steps 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2019
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Manfred Max Bergman (max.bergman@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Obviously, writing in general and scientific writing for peer-reviewed journals in particular is neither linear nor accomplished in 10 easy steps. And if there were indeed steps, they would not be easy. Writing for peer-reviewed journals requires strategic thinking, creativity, discipline, persistence, and sensitivity. In this course, we will learn how to select a suitable publishing outlet, write a first draft of a manuscript, review manuscripts from other course participants, and respond to reviewers’ comments.

Participants will work on their own or someone else’s manuscript. Throughout the course, one illustrative paper will be developed, step-by-step. This is an active, work-intensive, writing-based course.
Lernziele - Learn to conceptualize an academic paper based on a research project
- Write a manuscript for peer-review publication
- Review a manuscript for peer-reviewed journals
- Edit a manuscript based on reviewers’ comments
- Learn how to communicate with editors and reviewers
Literatur Key texts connected substantively to the paper that you will be working on. I will provide more details and guidance about this during the course.
Bemerkungen - MA and PhD candidates from the social and related sciences
- Limited to the first 15 inscribers
- EITHER have a completed data analysis, ready for integration into a peer-reviewed paper OR willingness to work on someone else’s manuscript
