| Inhalt | This seminar looks at the English(es) found in southeast Asian nations, with particular focus on Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The primary focus will be on sociolinguistic aspects: multilingualism, language policies, language attitudes and domains of use will be considered, much like the various indexical roles of varieties of English. Current theoretical approaches in sociolinguistics will inform our reading of local case studies. Structural linguistic elements characterising individual varieties will also be covered, whereas the way in which they index various social meanings will be the primary aim of individual case studies. |
| Lernziele | Students will be exposed to current theoretical trends in sociolinguistics and world English research. They will develop a close understanding of the sociolinguistic situation in South East Asia. Further, they will learn to critically engage with SEA linguistic data through hands-on experience in the form of geographically and socially defined case studies. |
