Inhalt Case studies are used in academia in two contrasting ways: as an illustrative, situated case to teach and debate relevant concepts, ideas, theories, conflicts, and solutions to problems on the one hand, or as a social science research approach on the other. The former is well established in business studies, while the latter is popular in most social and related sciences. In this seminar, we will introduce case studies as a research framework. Topics to be covered include types of case studies, scope of case studies, justifications and critiques of case study research, field and desk research on cases, and case studies as part of a multimethod research approach. The first part of each session will consist of an overview of a designated topic, the second will present a case study that exemplifies aspects covered in the seminar. Substantively, the cases to be discussed in each session relate to sustainability from a societal and social science perspective.
Lernziele - Assess the strengths and weaknesses of a the case study method and specific case studies
- Differentiate between types of case studies and their fields of application
- Become aware of opportunities and limitations of case studies in scientific research
