| Inhalt | Gender Equality is an overarching and long-term development goal of many international, national, and local organizations. While many strides have been made in the last century toward a more gender equal society, gender equality advocates, policymakers, and organizations have faced backlash in their attempts. The spaces where gendered relations are negotiated are manifold, ranging from bathrooms to war zones. Both structural obstacles as well as active backlash stand in the way of achieving gender equality. In order to continue to work towards a gender equal society, those that oppose gender equality efforts, their tactics and motivations must be better understood. This class will explore a variety of efforts towards gender equality as well as cases where they were met with “backlash” and opposition. Students will learn to identify equality strategies, tactics and narratives used by advocates for gender equality as well opposition actors, and motivations of the various stakeholders involved. Additionally students will interrogate the concept of “backlash” and analyze its usage and utility in the existing literature. Through the use of case studies on gender equality efforts and opposition to it, students will develop informed suggestions for strategies to advance gender equality and how to avoid or combat adversary reactions. At the beginning of the semester, students will choose a week/theme that they will lead a class discussion on. Each week 1-3 students (depending on class size) will work together to present a critical analysis of the required readings for the week they chose, and lead an in-class discussion about the week’s theme. Students may use powerpoint, conceptual maps, or other means to present the main findings of each reading and the overall theme of the week. Students should bring in outside material, videos, images, other media to further illustrate the theme of the week. Final Examination: Students (as a small group) will create and participate in a poster session. Groups of 2-3 students will choose an event or theme focused around gender equality or resistance/opposition to gender equality as a case study. Students will identify actors, tactics and narratives used by actors, and possible motivations of various stakeholders involved in the case. Poster sessions will be held in two groups, so students should be prepared to answer questions from their peers about their case study, as group 1 will view group 2’s posters and vice versa. |
| Lernziele | Goal: For students to be able to understand different approaches to gender equality and to identify and analyze events of opposition. We will look at both instances of resistance to gender equality, but also agency, where people are fighting for a more equal society. We will examine the different motives at work as well as the different forms of acceptance and contestation. The students will get to know tactics and narratives used by the actors involved. The aim of the course is for students to be able to apply what they have learned in the class to various cases of gender equality struggles and backlash/opposition, and to develop possible suggestions for how to devise strategies that might actually result in more equality.Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to 1. Identify and compare the various actors involved in gender equality struggles, and their tactics. Analyze possible motivations of various stakeholders and the narratives used. 2. Develop a case study focusing on an event or theme around gender equality or resistance/opposition to gender equality, which exemplifies the themes discussed throughout the class. |

| Bemerkungen | All Seminars will be graded in the Department of Political Science. Grading scale 6.0 to 1.0, whereupon 4.0 is a pass. The number of participants is limited. The places are assigned according to date of enrollment and subject of study. Priority will be given to students of Political Science and Gender Studies. Please take note: The first session of the seminar will be held via zoom on 22 September 2021. This session will serve as an information session for all interested students. Please take not that you will have to decide at the end of this session whether you will continue with the seminar for the rest of the term. Since we have only a limited number of places due to Corona restrictions, we want to make sure that places in the seminar are not blocked by people who will not take part for the full semester. If there are more students than places in this first session, we will distribute the places according the date of registration to the course in Mona. As of the second session we will conduct the sessions in-person according to the current Corona rules. This course is co-taught by Megan Kelly and Julia Wartmann |

| Hinweise zur Leistungsüberprüfung | Deadlines • On the week that a student/group will present the required readings/theme of the week, the student/group must send the outline of their presentation to the class by Tuesday at 19:00 at the latest. • Students should send their case study topic for the final poster session/examination by the 17th of November. • The Final Examination/Poster Session/Presentation will take place in the last week of class on the 22nd of December 2021. Assessment Final grades will be given based on the 1.0-6.0 scale. Students will be assessed based on three components: 1. Active participation in weekly in-class discussions, 25% 2. Group presentation on required readings, 25% 3. Final case study presentation, 50% Optional: Students may choose to write a seminar essay for the course in order to receive more credit points for this seminar. If a student chooses to write a seminar essay for this course they should alert the instructors by the 17th of November at the latest. January 15th is the last day to submit a final version of the seminar essay. Punctuality Students are expected to be prepared to begin class on time. Consistent tardiness without an excuse will result in a deduction in points from the Participation assessment. |
