62600-01 - Kurs: The Case Study Method 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2022
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Manfred Max Bergman (max.bergman@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Zinette Bergman (zinette.bergman@unibas.ch)
Inhalt Although most well-known case studies in the social sciences are descriptive, the literature on case study research focuses on either formalized approaches, such as the Harvard Business Case, or inferential approaches seeking to identify causal relationships and mechanisms. Consequently, many less experienced researchers intending to use case studies as part of a social science research project have to find their own way through contradictory and conflicting definitions and recommendations. The aim of this course is to introduce a wider variety of case study research methods to course participants. The course will cover how to conduct case studies in the social sciences, including types and scope of case studies, case study research design, case selection, data collection, analysis of cases, writing and publishing cases, and justifications and critiques of case study research. The focus will be on qualitative approaches to case study research although case studies as part of a multi- and mixed method research design will also be discussed.

The first part of each session will consist of an overview of a designated topic, the second will present one or two case studies that exemplify aspects covered in the seminar. Substantively, the illustrative cases presented in each session relate to sustainability from a societal and social science perspective.
Lernziele Participants will be able to
- assess the strengths and weaknesses of the case study method and specific case studies, and
- differentiate between types of case studies and their fields of application.
