Inhalt | This lecture course closely relates to and expands on issues discussed in the proseminar "Introduction II: Literary Theory" (36485). It surveys a number of crucial issues and concepts in literary and cultural theory. Topics covered range from Hans-Georg Gadamer's reflections on how we can understand literary texts from the past over the New Historicists' focus on the 'historicity of texts' and the 'textuality of history' to the psychoanalytic thinker Jacques Lacan's explorations of (literary) structures of desire. Each session or group of sessions will provide an introduction to a particular school of literary and cultural theory. Together, we will explore ways in which often complex theoretical reflections on human sense-making can be made useful for analyses of specific literary texts and other cultural artifacts. This is an interactive lecture course in which you are expected to participate actively in pair work and plenary discussions. For that reason, it is essential that you read the texts assigned as preparatory reading for each session--all of which are available on ADAM. Note that this course works independent of "Theory Survey II/II: Media Theory" (21765), but you are encouraged to attend both, in whatever order you prefer. |
Lernziele | You are introduced to a number of crucial issues and concepts in literary and cultural theory and take first (or further) steps in using theoretical concepts to analyze specific literary texts and other cultural artifacts. |
Literatur | Course texts will be made available on ADAM one week before the beginning of term. You need to bring along the handouts for each session, INCLUDING THE FIRST. They are also available on ADAM. |
Bemerkungen | The lecture slides are available on ADAM. Note that, together with my colleagues in literary and cultural studies, I am offering a course (the proseminar "Introduction II: Literary Theory", 36485) whose topic is closely related to this lecture course. |
