Inhalt | During the preparation of a doctorate in Literary studies, one often has to make important choices about the reception of the texts under study. Should one scutinize the impact that the works had on the public at the time of their publication, and if so, how to reconstruct this impact ? Should one read all the press articles (when they exist), study the correspondence of contemporaries, look for the opinions of other writers, etc. ? Does reception occur only a posteriori, or are there cases where it has retroacted on the works before they were even made public, hence changing their writing? Which works of criticism or literary history, this particular and specialised form of reception, will one choose to read and discuss in the course of one's own PhD, rather than others? Finally, how do we observe and put into words our own reception of the texts, perhaps discarding what might seem too personal, too intimate, or not generalizable enough, in this experience? The Kolloquium will propose to address these questions in three complementary ways. (1) A general reflection on the concept of reception and its practical treatment. That could include sessions on some key reception theorists (such as Iser or Jauss), as well as discussions on the different forms that reception may take ; the variable significance of press echoes, translations, etc., and the way they can be approached ; the capacity of any given text to stage the reception of other texts and works (reading scenes ; performance scenes ; museum scenes etc) and its links to intertextuality and intermediality ; the way a text may programm (or not) its own reception, sometimes setting traps for the reader ; the relationship between "self-reception" and creation (when does an author read anew one of his published works and to what aim ?) ; the role of certain "privileged" recipients (friends who are consulted during the creation of a work to provide feedback, editors, illustrators, etc.) ; the links between collective reception and potential conflicts of interpretation ; the notions of delayed and displaced reception ; the one of "non-reception", etc. (2) Sessions dedicated to the challenges, difficulties or questions that each participant may encounter in their specific work (which will allow for case studies). (3) Each participant will have the opportunity to submit written parts of the thesis to the group, to examine how the reception of others can enrich each work. The exact balance between these three poles will depend on the wishes of the group. |
