| Inhalt | Cities are among the most dynamic and interesting physical and social spaces of contemporary Africa. A key factor is the rapid urbanisation both of mega-cities (such as Lagos or Kinshasa) as well as of mid-sized cities, that are less in the limelight. Cities are melting-pots of opportunities and of risks which individuals, social groups, and communities encounter. The governance of such rapidly growing cities is beset with difficulties, ranging from crime-control, traffic regulation to waste-management. At the same time, there is a growing body of research which seeks to outline the innovation and transformations that are taking place, some of which are specific to African cities, others that need to be understood in a comparative perspective. This seminar seeks to discuss some key factors characterising cities in Africa, offer an overview over relevant literature and research on African cities, highlight often "invisible" processes of transformation and change, and critically assess images and interventions of urban governance in Africa. |
