| Inhalt | This seminar closes a cycle of three advanced seminar dedicated to the study of the interconnections between war, peace and state formation in Africa. It will concentrate on the issue of legitimacy. How is legitimacy constructed, historically and sociologically, through conflict? What is the influence of war and conflict on the dynamics of legitimacy in so-called post-conflict contexts? To what extent can legitimate institutions be 'built' through international intervention, and to what extent are they the result of long-lasting endogenous dynamics? |
| Lernziele | Participants in this advanced seminar are acquainted with the main debates in policy as well as in academic circles around statebuilding in societies after civil war. They critically engage with and reflect upon key concepts such as legitimacy, statehood and (post-)conflict. |
