Inhalt The city is a fascinating subject to study. It breeds images and it is an image in itself. The experience of the city as a visual, built space shapes the image of the city as much as its experience as a social and cultural space. The image of the city in the minds of its inhabitants is the source as well as the outcome of daily practices. For instance, the distinction of safe and unsafe areas and the corresponding strategies to organise one's life generates mental maps of places to avoid or where to socialise with friends and others. Other images flow through the city as material pictures and re-appear in various locations. Global images are proliferated through adds and electronic media, other pictures are produced by the inhabitants at all levels, from the quarters and houses where the people meet to the city as a whole.
This seminar looks at the city and the visual from two perspectives. It is organised in three parts. Part one aims at a clarification of some basic concepts, namely the urban and urbanity, image and picture, imagery and imagination. Part two looks at the image of the city, while part three looks at the image in the city. Parts two and three examine the respective perspectives by means of selected case studies, mainly from African cities.
