| Inhalt | This course is aimed at conceptualising the city in terms of social struggles of actors in an urban context. Rather than understanding ‚city politics’ as municipal or other official, formalised procedures and institutions, we shall seek to elaborate a social theory of conflictive transformation of the city. This is particularly salient in a context where public urban order is not or unevenly dominated by state institutions, as can be for instance observed in many cities across Africa. In this seminar, politics is understood as the interaction between urban actors in articulating their needs and interests, the impact such articulation has on their power relations, and the role and effects of such interactions on the agency of the various actors. These interactions can be framed in terms of encounters, negotiations as well as contestation or outright conflict. Of key interest here are the actors, the sites and the dynamics of such politics in the (African) city, based on case studies. The conceptual frame of reference will be provided by a critical engagement with the urban theories of Henri Lefebvre and Manuel Castells. |

(3) An independent, critical reflection of key issues and phenomena of politics and the city in Africa. |
