28842-01 - Proseminar: "The Lost Generation": F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2011
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Franziska Gygax (franziska.gygax@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Fitzgerald and Hemingway belong to a group of American writers who left their native country in the early decades of the twentieth century and went to Paris (and other places in Europe) where they produced some of the most influential works of the century. Both Fitzgerald and Hemingway created exemplary texts that deal with aimlessness, loss, exile, alienation, and a questioning of gender roles. Many of these issues were related to the aftermath of World War I. Moreover, this literary expatriatism is intricately linked to what has become known as modernism.
Lernziele Students will be introduced to these two influential representative American modernist writers and to theoretical issues on expatriatism, modernism, and gender.

Students exercise and expand the range of skills they have acquired in the first year. A more informed engagement with primary and critical texts will enable them to write their first (shorter) seminar paper at the end of the spring term and to make an informed decision regarding their further course of studies.
Literatur F. Scott Fitzgerald, "Tender Is the Night" (Penguin Modern Classics); Ernest Hemingway, "In Our Time" and "The Sun Also Rises" (Scribner). Theoretical texts will be available on ISIS by the beginning of the semester.
