Inhalt Environmental niche modelling / species distribution modelling in Ecology
Over the last two decades, species distribution models (SDMs) have been increasingly used to predict the geographic distribution of taxa and biodiversity or to test hypotheses about which environmental variables determine distributions. These models relate species observations (presence/absence or abundance) to a set of environmental variables, often of topohraphic and climatic nature, in order to model a species’ realized niche and its associated potential distribution in the landscape.
Recent advances in SDMs allow forecasting anthropogenic effects on patterns of biodiversity at different spatial and temporal scales and SDMs are also increasingly applied to wildlife management issues, emphasizing the need for reliable methods to evaluate the accuracy of their predictions.

Morning: 9–12 h: 2 h class + 1 h article review and discussion / 13–17 h: practical on laptop
Lernziele During this lecture, we will first discuss the ecological principles and assumptions underpinning species distribution models (SDMs), highlight critical limitations and decisions inherent in the construction and evaluation of SDMs and provide an overview of recent advances in this discipline (e.g. ENSEMBLE forecasting, model averaging).
We will finally review and discuss new avenues for incorporating species migration, population dynamics, biotic interactions, process-based and physiologically meaningful variables into SDMs at various spatial and temporal scales.
