| Inhalt | Über die Fachkreise hinaus berühmt wurde Prof. Joan Connelly mit Ihrem Buch Portrait of a Priestess: Women ans Ritual in Ancient Greece (2007). Furore machte Ihr 1996 im American Journal of Archeology mit dem Titel “Parthenon and Parthenoi: A Mythological Interpretation oft he Parthenon Frieze”. In dem Spezialseminar wird sie vor allem ihre aktuellen Forschungen zur Deutung dieses wichtigen Weltkulturerbes präsentieren. Dabei wollen wir auch die textlichen Quellen, insbes. Euripides’ Erechtheus gemeinsam mit den Studierenden lesen, interpretieren und für die Deutung fruchtbar machen. Weiteren innovativen Input auch in methodologischer Hinsicht wird sie uns durch die Behandlung der Archeology of Performance geben. Hier wie auch im Bereich Mythos, Landschaft, Sacred Space, Kosmos ergeben sich ausserordentlich fruchtbare Uberschneidungen mit den Forschungen der Basler Gräzistik (bes. Performativität, mythisch-rituelle Poetik, Anthropologie, Mythoskonzepte) und der hiesigen Altertumswissenschaften (Raum, Methode, Grenzen). Als Direktorin der Yeronisos Grabung in Zypern und als Mitglied des Cultural Property Advisory Committee der US Regierung wird uns die Professorin der New York University auch neue Einblicke in diese archäologische Arbeit liefern. Am Donnerstag, 11.10. wird sie einen öffentl. Abendvortrag halten: The Parthenon Frieze: Engaging with a New Paradigm Dazu führt sie aus: “Never before in human history has there been a structure that is at once so visible to the world, so celebrated, so examined, so invested with authority and, yet, so strangely impenetrable at its core. What is the origin of this cult place within the mytho-poetic framework of Athenian consciousness? What events from the mythical past were commemorated in the sacred rituals observed here for nearly one thousand years? Using the Parthenon’s sculptured frieze as a point of entry, Connelly presents a new paradigm for understanding the building, one that starts with religion, not politics, as its point of departure. Since the late eighteenth century, the frieze has been viewed as a snapshot of the fifth-century Athenian citizenry marching in an historical Panathenaic procession. Viewed without the benefit of a myth reference, the frieze stands outside the conventions of Greek temple decoration that regularly derived subject matter from the mythical past. Arguing that the frieze tells the story of how the first Athenian king, Erechtheus, sacrificed his daughter to save the city, Connelly presents a wholly new, mythological reading of the images, one that evokes the central role of sacrifice within Athenian democratic social values.” |
