31623-01 - Seminar: Imagination 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2012
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Till Förster (till.foerster@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The theme:
Much of the literature on imagination makes use of the notion of imagination in a rather unspecific, intuitive way. Most publications focus much more on the content of imagination, for instance political ideas and agendas, than on imagination itself. In particular anthropological publications describe and analyse “political, moral, religious” and many other sorts of imagination from what it produced but less as a social practice. However, as a distinct dimension of social practice and as a concept of social theory, imagination is almost absent in anthropological debates. However, imagination is a dimension of all social practice. The images that social actors have in mind when they act motivate them because they serve as guidelines to what the actors will want to attain in the future. Images also bestow form on experience and hence enable actors to orient themselves in a lifeworld that could be overwhelming, irritating or simply too complex without such images of its essential characteristics. Having an image of the social and natural lifeworld in mind is hence a necessity for all social actors. How these images come into existence is the general theme of this seminar.

The seminar develops a critical understanding of imagination. It tries to sharpen the under-standing of imagination in order to articulate more clearly what social, cultural, political, moral, religious and other forms of imagination are about. The seminar therefore discusses imagination more generally before using it as a concept to analyse social practice through a few selected case studies. The seminar is organised in three parts. Part one aims at a clarification of classical and recent literature on imagination as practice, starting with David Hume’s and John Locke’s classical philosophical contributions and later looking at contemporary thinking on imagination. A guiding question is how these texts can contribute to an understanding of imaginative social practice. Part two looks at the scattered, more theoretical anthropological and sociological literature on imagination. Part three finally examines a number of case studies, mainly from Africa but also from India and Europe.

Lernziele The seminar works on two levels:
The first two parts are more suited for advanced MA and PhD students that have a lasting interest in theoretical debates. Part three is suited for all students who want to analyse an ethnographic work on imagination with regard to how it may relate to the concepts developed in the first two parts. All participants are expected to present a book on the subject, either a classic in the field or a case study. The presentation should be about 30min., followed by a discussion of 15min. A handout about the most important arguments of that book should accompany the presentation. The handout should not have more than two pages.
Advanced MA and PhD students should do a presentation on one of the narrower topics proposed below, and the presentation should be about 45 to 60min., followed by a discussion of 30 to 45min. It is expected that the presenters search for the relevant literature and develop a presentation that gives the other students an overview on that particular sub-field.
Papers should be 20 to 25 pages long (12pt, 1.5 line spacing).
