| Inhalt | Languages can differ considerably in how they carve up the semantic space. There is a longstanding and fervent debate as to what this means for the mental representation of conceptual knowledge: Are the attested differences just on the surface, while the underlying "building blocks" of conceptual structure are the same, or do these differences correlate with other aspects of cognition such that language itself contributes to shaping our mind? In this seminar we will focus on approaches that consider crosslinguistic diversity as indicator of the cognitive richness and flexibility of the human species. |
| Lernziele | With a focus on three conceptual domains (colour, space, taste perception) students will learn the specific contents of the claims underlying linguistic relativity (often referred to as the "Sapir-Whorf-hypthesis"), and the methods used to study the effect of language on other cognitive domains. |
