| Inhalt | "Corruption" is a problematic and frequently loaded term, and yet it denotes a highly pertinent political and social issue: the boundary-crossing between the public and the private, the formal and the informal, the legitimate and illegitimate. In early literature on development and modernisation, corruption was conceptualised as a kind of a growing-pain, easing the transition between "traditional" and "modern" societies. In the past decades, this linear thinking on social change has been thoroughly shaken up. With the consolidation of neo-patrimonial or even kleptocratic regimes in Africa and the wave of "failed" states in the 90s, "corruption" and "African politics" were routinely equated with each other. Against this backdrop, the study of corruption has regained traction for two reasons: firstly, on an analytical level, through the need for a more differentiated, empirical understanding of state-society relations; rather than understanding corruption as the "deviation" from an idealtypical model, the anthropology of the state looks at social practices, norms and imaginaries, and the meanings that such statehood is imbued with. Secondly, on a policy level, through the development discourse of good governance, which has been hugely influential in defining corruption as a main cause of poverty, marginalisation and exploitation; this discourse resonates in African politics, where the "fight against corruption" has become a battle-cry for civil society and politicians alike. In this seminar, we shall be fleshing out key approaches to corruption, and critically discussing the way in which social agency and political transformation are linked to articulations of corruption. |
