| Inhalt | From SARS to Swine Flu, from AIDS to malaria, from mad cow disease to melamine poisoning, global health issues often capture the popular imagination. Health tragedies invoke our empathy or outrage when we hear about them on the nightly news. Stories of pandemic diseases or tainted goods stoke our fears. These and many other issues are intimately tied with the political and economic organization of an increasingly global world. This course seeks to overcome this silence by looking at connections between globalization, broadly understood, and health. We will explore ways that four main aspects of globalization – economic, cultural, social and political – intersect with health. In addition, each student will carry out a semester-long research project on a subject related to the course theme, culminating in a research paper. To aid in this task, we will frequently discuss the research process, work in peer groups, and look at course readings for insight into the research and writing process. |
