| Inhalt | The course introduces students to the sociological study of African societies. This will be done through a review of early sociological accounts of Africa as can be elicited from the work of George Balandier in France, for instance, but also, and more generally, from the work of structural-functional anthropologists; it will also discuss major theoretical perspectives such as modernization theories relating them to debates in sociology; finally, it will also raise methodological issues concerning the nature of social structure and social differentiation in African countries. The course is designed to get students acquainted with the challenge of approaching African societies from a sociological perspective and should make a contribution towards sharpening their awareness with regards to the limits and potential of sociological practice. |
| Lernziele | Students should become familiar with major theoretical, methodological and empirical issues involved in the sociological study of African societies. They should know the percursors, their their theoretical and methodological approaches and, more fundamentally, they should become aware of the challenges posed by the use of a theoretical and conceptual apparatus developed in specific historical, cultural and political contexts in different settings. |
