| Inhalt | The seminar takes the title of a classic book in medical anthropology as a point of departure: "Culture, Health and Illness" by Cecil Helman. As Helman stated in the preface to the fifth edition of 2007, the textbook has been used in over 40 countries (including in over 120 universities and colleges in North America), and translations have appeard in several different languages. In the seminar, we shall take a critical look at how Helman conceptualizes anthropological perspectives on health and illness. As the title of his book implies, he considers "culture" as a key concept, but what conceptualizations of culture does he use, which ones does he criticize, and why? How does his understanding of culture relate to current debates in anthropology and neighbouring disciplines? In the second part of the seminar we shall examine how other leading medical anthropologists conceptualize cultural dimensions in the study of health and illness, ask what such studies contribute to general anthropology and explore how they relate to similar work in neighboring disciplines. |

| Hinweise zur Leistungsüberprüfung | All participants are expected to present a book on the subject, either a classic in the field or a case study. The presentation should be about 30 minutes, followed by a discussion of 15 minutes. A handout with the most imporant arguments of the book should accompany the presentation. The handout should not have more than two pages. |
