Inhalt Marrano writing: the case of Antonio Enríquez Gómez (1600-1663)

This course centers on the literary works of the merchant and writer Antonio Enríquez Gómez, (Cuenca around 1600, d. Seville 1663)
The word 'marrano' triggers a whole set of notions that have their origin in the writer's condition as (descendant of) converted Jew (s); that have to do with a real or supposed double life between two religious confessions, 17th century Iberian Catholicism and a secret form of Judaism; and that ultimately has led to general philosophical speculations on dissimulation and identity that surpass the historical dimension of Early Modern Iberia (see the term in the writings of Derrida).
Antonio Enríquez Gómez, whose parents had been persecuted by the Spanish Inquisition led a succesful life as merchant and playwright in Madrid, until he was forced to leave Spain -under an increasing threat of the Inquisition- and settled in France. There, he lived between fellow conversos, of whom a part wished to conform to Christian majority and part felt the need to live as Jews, albeit under the limitations endured in seventeenth century France. There, between his activities as merchant, Enríquez Gómez kept on writing, and in Rouen he published several works, some of which, in their critique of the Inquisition, were highly controversial. He even wrote a poem on a martyr of Judaism, "Judá Creyente", burnt alive in an auto-da-fe celebrated in Valladolid in 1644.
In 1650, however, Enríquez Gómez returned to Spain and adopted the fake identity of a Basque nobleman by the name of Fernando de Zárate, living at Seville and again producing a number of comedias or plays that enjoyed popularity, not at least throught their celebration of Catholic Saints. In 1661, however, the Inquisition discovered the true identity of Zárate and finally arrested Enríquez Gómez. The merchant/writer died in prison, before a sentence was pronounced, in 1663.
Among the rich production and high quality of Spanish Golden Age Literature and Drama in particular, the works of Enríquez Gómez/Zárate have long been considered as secondary, until the interest of the author as a converso, or as a critic of the Inquisition was rediscovered. Nowadays, Enríquez Gómez is studied as one of the heterodox writers of Golden Age Spain, and many of his works have received special attention for their content, that can perhaps best be described as "marrano": that is, today, many scholars and readers discover a hidden -critical, even Jewish- content in Enríquez' production.
The present course will start with an status quaestionis on the life of Enríquez Gómez set in the context of 17th century Spain (and Early Modern Europe); then, the focus will be on the literary production of Enríquez Gómez/Zárate, where the validity of the concept of "marrano writing" -and the implicit notions of authenticity and dissimulation- will be critically examined.

The course is taught in English, although readings of primary texts of Enríquez Gómez will be in Spanish.
