| Inhalt | The seminar introduces students to the history and development of the study of knowledge as a distinct field in sociology. It discusses the main authors and the traditions which they established through their work as well as the broad range of application offered by the sociology of knowledge. The main focus of the seminar consists however in encouraging students to bring the conceptual and theoretical tools of the sociology of knowledge to bear on the study of Africa. To this end, the seminar will concentrate its attention on science and technology but also on development policy as two fields that have particularly benefitted from the inputs of the sociology of knowledge. The main idea will be to stimulate students to view the study of knowledge as yet another perspective on the study of society and social action, particularly in the African context. |
| Lernziele | Students will be acquainted - with the history and development of the sociology of knowledge in general; - with the main authors in the field (Max Scheller, Karl Mannheim, Robert K. Merton, Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann, etc.); Students will be made familiar with the main traditions in the sociology of knowledge and its broad range of application; Students will become competent in approaching issues (in the fields of society, culture, economy and politics) using conceptual tools from the sociology of knowledge. |
