Dozierende Peter Kugler (peter.kugler@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Today's monetary system with central banks providing fiat money (so called paper money standard) is a historically very recent phenomenon as it was created during the 20th century. Historically dominant is metallic money (mostly silver and gold coins) and the paper money circulating with a increasing share since the industrial revolution could be converted to silver or gold in normal times (metallic standard). There is a strong difference between a metallic standard and a modern monetary system with central banks and fixed or flexible exchange rates known from the usual courses in (international) monetary economics. Therefore, this course deals with the theory of commodity money and its historical development as well as the analysis of historical inflation and deflation episodes. In addition hyperinflations are discussed which appeared all with a paper money standard and with one exception in the 20th century.
