| Inhalt | The seminar introduces students into the sociology of migration with a focus on issues pertaining, on the one hand, to Africa and development and, on the other, to Europe and democracy. The idea is to make students sensitive to how migration can be described and analysed as a social practice which bears on social relations and the normative framework within which these are invested with meaning in different societies. To this end the seminar will discuss causes, forms and consequences of migration flows as well as how these inhere into the quality of politics in different settings (Africa and Europe). The seminar is part of a research project on « Safeguarding Democracy » currently underway at the University of Basel in cooperation with Witwatersrand University in South Africa. The research project looks into how debates around migration and foreigners in both countries constitute contests over values and interests and seeks to ascertain the extent to which the forms taken by such debates can promote or undermine democracy. |
| Lernziele | Students - are familiar with the main sociological literature on migration; - acquired the ability to articulate migration issues with sociological concepts and theories; - appreciate the actual dynamics of migration in Africa and Europe; - apply acquired knowledge to an understanding of the stakes involved in current debates over migration in Europe. |
