| Inhalt | Recent trends of international migration signify increased movements of highly-skilled workers to countries other than their own. This form of migration, often encouraged and facilitated, may be more deliberate than that of migrants of lower skills. It deserves special attention since the determinants of their migration may be different and reversed from those found in other forms of migration. The course discusses theories and empirical research about migration determinants from social and economic background and places it in a global environment. We do not focus exclusively on labor migration, but discuss different channels of migration through which skilled people move abroad, be it through student mobility, family migration and also through refugee and forced migration. The course looks at the challenges faced by different types of skilled migrants to transition to labor markets in destination countries and to position themselves therein. We will discuss the challenges of conceptualizing highly skilled migration, of contextualizing it in the particular case of Switzerland and interpreting new forms of international mobility. The point of departure for this course are the lived experiences of migrants. Students will conduct primary research with a chosen group of skilled migrants and analyze the results according to the selected topic. The course is structured around discussion of key debates surrounding highly skilled migration: recruitment channels, comparative migration policies, ethics of migration policies, diaspora formation, the expatriate culture, and how mobility challenges established social and political systems. The course draws on ethnographic examples from across the world and compares them with the results of primary research conducted by students with highly skilled migrants in Switzerland. The course draws on insights of different disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, political science and economics. |
| Lernziele | The main objective of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and techniques necessary to address highly skilled migration in a global environment. The course also ensures that students are capable of using major qualitative modes of data collection and analysis in migration studies. It includes practical guidance on finding appropriate sources and allows students to discuss and think critically about the reasons for and effects of highly skilled migration on both sides of migration channels. |

| Teilnahmebedingungen | Grundstudium abgeschlossen. Fliessendes Englisch. Die Teilnehmerzahl ist aus Gründen der Qualitätssicherung der Lehre auf 25 beschränkt. Die Teilnehmenden werden nach Fachrichtung, Studiengang und in der Reihenfolge ihrer Anmeldung auf die Liste gesetzt. Wer im Rahmen von Auslandaufenthalten und von Austauschprogrammen in Basel studiert wird unabhängig vom Listenplatz immer aufgenommen. |
| Anmeldung zur Lehrveranstaltung | Lehrveranstaltungen mit beschränkter Teilnehmerzahl können ab 01.02.2015 bis 11.02.2015 über MOnA belegt werden. Die Zuteilung erfolgt durch die Dozentin. Bis 14.02.2015 erhalten alle definitiv aufgenommenen Studierenden eine Bestätigungsmail der Dozentin. Wer an der ersten Sitzung einer Veranstaltung dennoch unentschuldigt fehlt, wird von der Liste gestrichen. In der ersten Sitzung einer Veranstaltung oder per Mail in der Woche der ersten Sitzung erfahren Studierende auf einer Warteposition, ob sie doch teilnehmen können. |
