39716-01 - Exkursion: Physiogeographie Mitteleuropas 2 KP

Inhalt This five-day field trip is designed to offer a flavour of the geography of southern England. Due to the immediate proximity of this region to the sea, coastal geomorphology, coastal erosion and the management of coastal areas in sensitive landscapes will feature prominently. In addition, a wide range of other topics will be covered during the trip. These include the geomorphology and land management of the South Downs National Park (SDNP), the significance of Stonehenge, the geology and palaeontology of Lyme Bay, as well as relevant / interesting local history, sustainability and English literature and links with landscape and environment.
Programme (provisional)
Day 1: Mon 22.06.15
- AM: Meet Gatwick Airport and travel to Birling Gap (see photo above) on the southeast coast – Geomorphology, coastal erosion and issues of coastal management.
- PM: Cuckmere Haven – coastal sea defences – to manage or to implement ‘managed realignment’?
Day 2: Tues 23.06.15
- AM: Lewes, East Sussex – geomorphology and management within the South Downs National Park, local history of the town, floods, avalanches and attempts to become carbon neutral.
- PM: Brighton & environs – Chalk geology, Black Rock raised beach, changing climate, contemporary sea defences. Finish in Brighton city centre.
Day 3: Wed 24.06.15
- AM: Wiltshire – Stonehenge and surrounding archaeology, nearby sarsen field, their formation and use (in Stonehenge).
- PM: Dorset – geology and stratigraphy of Lyme Bay Jurassic coast and World Heritage Site – fossil-bearing rocks, Mary Anning, founder of Palaeontology. Fossil hunting for ammonites on Charmouth Beach (tidal status / weather permitting).
Day 4: Thurs 25.06.15
- AM: South Devon, Slapton Sands – discussion of beach geomorphology, tidal barrier, beach system and sediment cell circulation.
- PM: Visit to Hawsands lost village – case study of humans accelerating coastal erosion
Day 5: Fri 26.06.15
- AM: Mid-Devon, Dartmoor National Park (DNP) – geology & geomorphology of Dartmoor, weathering granite tors (including short walk to Heytor), archaeology, land use, landscape forms setting for famous English literature (Sherlock Holmes & The Hound of the Baskervilles), draw parallels with other literary works.
- PM: Drive back to Gatwick (ca. 4 hrs.): Tour ends late afternoon / early evening.
