| Inhalt | Second language learning (L2 acquisition) is different from learning a first language (L1 acquisition): In first language acquisition, children identify the form function patterns of their target language in tandem. In second language learning, speakers have already learned a system, which may give rise to positive and negative transfer, and their processing system has tuned in to certain distinctions, which makes it harder to discover and process new information packaging. In this course we will look at the learning processes that underlie first and second language learning, and then look in detail into aspects of English syntax and morphology that pose problems for learners from different language backgrounds. |
| Lernziele | Students will learn to understand the basic processes that lead to the identification of the form and function of linguistic units, as well as what makes certain domains of grammar easier or harder to learn. Where available, we will analyse learner data. |

| Teilnahmebedingungen | This seminar is open to MA students and BA students on the advanced level: for BA05 students those who have completed their proseminar paper in linguistics; for BA13 students those who have completed ALL three introductory modules (including the proseminar papers). |
