| Inhalt | The notion of space has always been key to the constitution of anthropology. However, the engagement with and understanding of space has changed dramatically since the so-called "spatial turn" of the Eighties. Space is not an empty vessel, but is socially produced; space is not a given anymore, space is a product of social practices and interactions. This destablised understanding of space leads to a more engaged approach to key concepts such as culture, place or identity. How do social practices produce and structure space? Who has the power to "make" spaces and how? How is culture spatialised, through which processes and dynamics? We shall discuss key contributions to the anthropology of space, but the main focus will be on a critical exploration of contemporary sites of engagement, such as the state or the city, as well as for instance public spaces, "non-spaces", or globalised spaces. |
