Inhalt This course starts with a thorough introduction, both from an empirical and a theoretical perspective, into the basic New Keynesian macroeconomic model. This framework has emerged as the workhorse for the analysis of monetary policy and its implications for inflation, economic fluctuations and welfare. The second part of the course will then discuss recent issues and debates related to monetary policy, such as quantitative easing, the Swiss exchange rate lower bound, or forward guidance.
Lernziele The main aim of this course is to describe and analyze the goals of monetary policy and to review the instruments available to central banks in order to pursue these goals. It will start with building a theoretical model that allows us to analyse monetary policy in a general equilibrium framework. We will then discuss the transmission mechanisms of monetary policy, the effectiveness of monetary policy actions, the differences between monetary policy rules and discretionary policy, as well as on institutional issues concerning central banks. Using simple econometric techniques, regularities in the data will be uncovered and a series of stylized facts to describe macroeconomic dynamics will be established. The course will also show exceptional periods in the data, such as the recent financial crisis, and show how central banks react to such challenges by using unconventional instruments, such as quantitative easing, the Swiss exchange rate lower bound, or forward guidance.
