Inhalt | All nations and societies are in constant flux. However, the degree and kind of change does and did not happen homogenously within nations, between societies, or over time. Disruptions from the Industrial Revolution, for example, introduced global discontinuities and transitions far beyond what can be described as social change. Considering socio-economic developments, climate change, and political dynamics, it could be argued that we are well into a new period of global disruptions and transitions. This undergraduate seminar goes beyond a description of social change by exploring contemporary societal dynamics in China, India, and South Africa, which exemplify the effects and consequences of massive global transitions of our age. The seminar thus sensitizes participants not only to how transitions and their consequences in so-called BRICS countries take place but what implications these transitions have globally, including on developed economies. The specific topics of the seminar will be selected by participants during the first session. They may include (a) inequality and change; (b) education, work, labor market; (c) industry and technology; (d) climate, food, water; and (e) migration, mobility, urbanization. A selection of these will be explored individually or comparatively among the three countries in relation to their societal influence, as well as their global implications. |
