45001-01 - Seminar: Law, Business and Economic Policy 6 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2016
Angebotsmuster Jahreskurs
Dozierende Jeffrey Macher (jeffrey.macher@unibas.ch)
Rolf Weder (rolf.weder@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This course is considered to be a highlight of the Summer School of Law, Business and Economic Policy, in particular, and of the MSc in Business and Economics, in general.

The target is to give master students an opportunity to write an own paper in English (that may be considered to be a first step towards the master’s thesis), to present the conclusions to an international audience of researchers at Georgetown University and New York University and discuss the results

This mini conference allows to establish contacts with professors and students at Georgetown University and New York University and is also embedded in a program that includes visits to and discussions with high-level representatives of well-known institutions in Washington DC (e.g., IMF, Worldbank, Peterson Institute, Cato Institute, Department of Justice, Swiss Embassy) and possibly in New York (UN).

Part of the students’ expenses will be covered. There is an award to be given for the best performance in the seminar.
Lernziele Students will deepen their knowledge in:

1. Writing an original scientific paper on an interesting topic that may serve as a first step to a Master's thesis.

2. Presenting the most important findings to a demanding audience in English in the U.S.

3. Getting to know a number of well-established institutions such as the Worldbank from the inside and being able to ask good questions and discuss critical issues with high-level representatives.

4. Developing a network with professors of the partner universities as well as with representatives of the institutions to be visited. This may be helpful for the individual careers particularly in terms of internships, Master theses or PhDs as experience shows.
Literatur Students will identify the relevant literature under the supervisions of Prof. Rolf Weder (University of Basel) and Prof. Jeffrey Macher (Georgetown University). A good starting point is always that literature which students have been facing throughout their intensive studies in the Master (or Bachelor) programme.
Bemerkungen We recommend to those students whose research project has been accepted to use the time to also discuss the topics with the professors engaged in the Summer School, teaching at the University of Basel in July and August.

Furthermore, we encourage the students getting in touch with a member of the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Basel in order to investigate whether the research project has the potential for a master thesis at a later stage. This can be done at any stage of the colloquium.

Note that some students may get a chance to write their master thesis under the co-supervision by a professor from Georgetown University or New York University, depending on their performance in the seminar.

Teilnahmebedingungen Students have to be enrolled in the Master of Science of Business and Economics of the University of Basel (exceptions are possible, for example for PhD students).

Enrollment is necessary in the autumn semester (writing the paper) and the spring semester (presentation and visits to the institutions).

Past enrollment in a course at the Summer School of Law, Business and Economic Policy at the WW-Faculty of the University of Basel is an asset, but not mandatory to be accepted to the seminar.
Anmeldung zur Lehrveranstaltung Application to summerschool-wwz@unibas.ch. Research proposals can be handed in until seminar is full. Applications have been welcome starting July 1, 2016. Final deadline is October 15, 2016.

We start early in order to give the students more time to write the seminar paper. The presentation will take place in the U.S. in the beginning of the spring semester (FS) of 2017 (February). For more information, see our weblink at https://wwz.unibas.ch/summerschool/master-seminar-in-the-us/.

Please submit a research proposal (3-4 pages) in which you explain your idea, the main research question and how you intend to answer the question. You should mention a possible theory that may help to find an answer and describe the empirical analysis (do you intend to do a case study or do you want to analyse data you have identified?). Name three to four important pieces of the current literature that is relevant for your research.

You will be informed within two weeks after the proposal has been handed in whether you are accepted to the master seminar.

Individual meetings are planned with Prof. Rolf Weder in August, September and October to discuss feedback to the proposal and /or paper in progress. More information can be obtained on our weblink at https://wwz.unibas.ch/summerschool/master-seminar-in-the-us/.

Topics should either include comparative aspects (USA , Europe, Switzerland), or integrate business and economics aspects or be based in the area of law and economics (which is a subfield in economics). See also the list of accepted topics of former seminars on the homepage of the Summer School.
