31600-01 - Praktikum: Experimental Geomorphology 4 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2016
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Nikolaus J. Kuhn (nikolaus.kuhn@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Surface processes are often difficult to observe in a controlled way in the natural environment. Experiments offer an opportunity to reduce complexity and test the relevance of individual factors on rates of geomorphic processes. While experiments are often straightforward to design, the practical reduction of complexity is not easy to achieve. Similarly, the results of experiments require careful interpretation before applied to the natural environment.
The course on Experimental Geomorphology offers students the opportunity to actively participate in a set of experiments simulating the interaction between hillslope and catchment processes. The design of the experiments and the interpretation of results are related to current issues in land degradation and fluvial geomorphology. Apart from a theoretical introduction, students participate in design, set up and execution of laboratory experiments. They will also analyse, present and report results.
