| Inhalt | We will look at the structure and growth of the learner lexicon in first and second language learning. With respect to first language learning, we will discuss what it means to learn and know a word, and what cues (social, pragmatic, distributional) children use to learn their meaning. In second language learning we focus on the integration of and competition between lexical items (e.g., issues of conceptual transfer). We will look at different part-of-speech classes (nouns, verbs, prepositions, function words) and the problems they pose for learning, and we will look at words in context (collocations, phraseology) to see to what extent learning of larger constructions supports meaning acquisition. |
| Lernziele | Students will gain insights into the nature of the lexicon and its mental storage and retrieval. In particular, they will come to understand the different sources that contribute to the semantics of words in context and that learners can draw on. In addition, we will look at different dictionaries and other digital resources for gaining information of word meaning as second language learners. |
