44986-01 - Seminar: Memory and Trauma in the Literature of the Deep South 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2016
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Franziska Gygax (franziska.gygax@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The troubled and burdensome history of the American South is omnipresent in the works by William Faulkner, Zora Neale Hurston, and Eudora Welty, and yet, in their novels the characters’ memories overshadow their lives in quite diverse ways. In Faulkner’s works race not only has a direct impact on the daily life on plantation homes, but also influences power relations of various generations. In the novel by Hurston, the African American writer, race affects the black protagonists in ways that mirror its complex construction because in the predominantly black community racial discrimination works quite differently. In Welty’s novel with its mainly white protagonists whiteness and race are addressed, which demonstrates that Welty fully recognized the color-blindness of Southern whites.
Lernziele In this seminar students will be introduced to exemplary writers of the American South and to concepts of memory and trauma, which affect the characters of these writers in different ways, but all of which related to issues of race besides gender.
